| Overview |
| The growth of broadband networks and high-speed connectivity to subscribers
has prompted widespread use of Peer-To-Peer (P2P) applications. P2P allows
users to share large data files such as copyrighted music, video, and other
content directly with other users anywhere on the network. P2P applications
consume between 60 percent and 80 percent of bandwidth capacity available
on ISP networks. Burgeoning demand also caused Internet carriers to upgrade
their network capacity to handle the surging traffic. |
|
| Challenge to Service Providers |
Subscribers can download and run various P2P clients, enabling the creation
of a P2P network on any service provider's network. The location and bandwidth
consumed by P2P users is not commonly dictated or controlled by service
providers so that traffic caused by P2P clients become dominant in the network
over time. ISP's have been faced with several P2P issues:
Network congestion caused by P2P traffic on many occasions
Customer dissatisfaction due to degraded broadband experience
Need to purchase costly backbone links and bandwidth
Difficulty of effective detection/control of P2P with conventional devices

| ARA Networks P2P Management Solution, PPTM(P2P Traffic Manager) |
| ARA Networks P2P management solution, PPTM, provides a high performance
and robust control system for P2P bandwidth consumption with a capability
of analysis and control of P2P traffic at Gigabit wire speeds. Using PPTM,
service providers can obtain immediate visibility into their networks, P2P
bandwidth consumption, as well as user and application. Using ARA Networks
PPTM solution with powerful traffic analysis and control capability, service
provider can enhance their ability to manage the network, ensuring their
revenues increase. |

Thorough Analysis of Network Traffic
Many service providers have deployed the PPTM solution in order to effectively
control P2P traffic. Featuring its unique application-layer traffic classification
mechanisms, the solution is able to identify and detect all P2P traffic
without packet loss and misidentification, including those using random
or unassigned port numbers. |
|
Thorough Control of P2P Traffic
Using the PPTM solution built on ARA Networks' unique IP traffic monitoring
platform, NMP(Network Monitoring Platform), the PPTM solution implements
flexible control policies on network traffic. Service providers can configure
control policies flexibly per user and application so as to maintain percentage
of bandwidth ratios for P2P traffic, ensuring that subscribers can still
use P2P, but within acceptable bounds or contractual obligations. |
|
Thorough Guarantee of Revenue Increase
Service providers can leverage their current network to manage the negative
effects of P2P usage without alienating their subscriber base. This allows
service providers to reduce key expenses like link and network bandwidth
upgrades due to P2P over usage, leading to benefits such as increase of
revenues, lower operational costs, and retain customers. The PPTM solution
provides relief for P2P challenges while generating immediate, visible return
on investment. |

| One of the largest ISPs in Korea having suffered from Internet traffic
surge of outbound international links was forced to tackle this headache.
They deployed PPTM to monitor the traffic on their international links first.
After several weeks of traffic monitoring and analysis, they found that
eDonkey and Bittorrent were dominant among the network traffic and mostly
generated by overseas users to download P2P files and the main cause prompting
the strain of the outbound international backbone links. They chose to control
P2P traffic by running multiple PPTM and benefited outbound traffic reduction
of 2Gbps with annual saving of USD 5 billion as a result. |
