Traffic Monitor
Monitor your traffic and manage your P2P bandwidth.
Overview
Growing broadband networks and high speed internet access to subscribers has seen an explosion in the use of peer to peer (P2P) applications. P2P allows users to share large data files, ( music, videos, programs, etc. ), directly over the network. P2P programs consume 60 ~ 80% of total bandwidth on ISP networks. Increase use of these programs prompts ISP providers to upgrade their networks to handle the demand on their traffic.

Benefits of P2P Traffic Manager
  • Cost savings on network bandwidth usage.
  • Monitor, analyze, control P2P clients & users.
  • Target and curb high bandwidth abusive users.
  • Granular control of P2P traffic, bandwidth % allocation, time/date.
  • Deliver high quality services & improve customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor and receive accurate, real time reports on web traffic.
  • Maintain user and application based quotas.
  • Configure bandwidth & shaping.

  • Challenges to ISP
Users can download and install various P2P clients and create a P2P network on any ISP’s network. The location and bandwidth consumed by P2P users usually go uncontrolled or unmonitored by ISPs. Over time traffic generated by P2P clients start dominating the network.

Several problems ISPs face with P2P traffic:
  • P2P traffic frequently causes network congestion.
  • Subscriber complaints due to slow broadband service.
  • Rising costs from purchasing costly backbone links and bandwidth.
  • Lack of monitoring or control of P2P traffic with existing devices.

  • ARA Networks P2P Traffic Manager Solution
Our solution provides a robust, high performance control system for P2P bandwidth consumption. It can analyze and monitor P2P traffic at gigabit wire speeds. ISPs can monitor and obtain immediate visual analytical reports into their network’s bandwidth consumption, (P2P traffic, user web traffic, web applications, etc. ). Our P2P Traffic Manager is a powerful traffic monitoring and control system. ISPs can better manage their networks, save bandwidth costs, increase revenues while delivering high quality service to satisfied subscribers.

Deep Packet Analysis of Network Traffic
Many ISPs globally have already deployed the P2P Manager solution to effectively control their P2P traffic. Features include a unique application layer traffic classification mechanism. The solution is able to identify and detect all P2P traffic without packet loss or misidentification. It can monitor and detect clients using random or unassigned ports.

    Total Control of P2P Traffic
The P2P Traffic Manager is built on a unique IP traffic monitoring platform, ( Network Monitoring Platform, NMP). This solution implements flexible control protocols on network traffic. ISPs have flexible configuration control protocols for users and applications to maintain bandwidth percentage ratios for P2P traffic. Subscribers can still use P2P clients but within acceptable bounds of ISPs bandwidth control.

    Increase your Revenue
ISPs can leverage their current networks and manage the negative effects of P2P traffic, without deterioration in services to subscribers. ISPs can reduce costs related to connection links and bandwidth upgrades due to the strain on their networks by P2P usage. This leads to benefits in increase in revenue, operational cost savings and higher quality service delivery to subscribers. The P2P Traffic Manager provides a total solution for ISP network manager’s challenges, while generating immediate visible results on return on investment.
Ex. A major ISP in Korea was suffering from a sudden surge in outbound international internet traffic. They deployed the P2P Traffic Manager and started monitoring their international links. After a few weeks of traffic monitoring and analysis they concluded that eDonkey & Bittorrent were dominating their network traffic. This outbound international traffic was generated by overseas users using P2P programs to download files from Korea. This caused a strain on the ISP’s outbound international backbone links. They deployed the P2P traffic control and benefited immensely. They were able to reduce their outbound traffic by 2 Gbps with an annual cost savings of billion USD.
